Kannon Bosatsu is also called Kanjizai Bosatsu which means listen to people praying at any time.
That is why he is so popular among people in Asia not only Japan.

In China, Kannon (Goddess-of-Mercy) image came to be carved in wood from around the 5th century,
After Buddhism was introdused into Japan through Korea in the 6th century,
the Kudara Kannon image and Guse Kannon image were deified Asuka period.
