Usually we use a Japanese cypress wood for a gold leaf statues.

A gold leaf is applied after lacquering an image useing Japanese rhus lacquer.
Almost buddhist image in Japan are finished this way.That because the gold image fulfils one of Buddha's thirty-two attributes,Golden skin,the buddha's whole dody gleams like the gold.
